Alumni as Partners for Growth: UNILAGEngineering Graduates Advance Institutional Growth

The UNILAGFaculty of Engineering Alumni Association (ºìÌÒÊÓƵFEAAA) convened its 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Engineering Lecture Theatre, reaffirming the strategic role of alumni in advancing institutional development.

The event, which featured goodwill messages, elections, and the commissioning of a legacy classroom project, highlighted the contribution of alumni to quality education, industry innovation, and sustainable partnerships within Nigeria’s higher education system.

In his remarks, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and member of the Association’s Board of Trustees, Professor Funso Falade, underscored the global significance of alumni as catalysts for institutional progress. He noted that across leading universities, alumni contributions remain critical to infrastructure development, academic excellence, and institutional reputation, key elements that support quality education and innovation.

Professor Falade emphasized that effective fundraising and strong alumni networks are indispensable for sustainable impact. He urged members to deepen diaspora engagement and mobilise successful graduates to give back, noting that such efforts contribute to inclusive economic growth and productive capacity.

Also speaking, the founding Chairman of the Association, Titi Omo-Ettu, commended ongoing initiatives to expand membership through strategic outreach. She described these efforts as essential to strengthening the Association’s ability to drive innovation, mentorship, and institutional support for capacity building and lifelong learning.

The Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Dideolu Falobi, highlighted the importance of leadership and active alumni engagement in fostering innovation and professional development. He encouraged the adoption of digital platforms to enhance connectivity and inclusion within the alumni network.

A major highlight of the AGM was the conduct of elections, which saw Engr. Gabriel Oluwasegun Arawole emerge as Secretary, while Engr. Dr. Olusegun Afolabi was elected Assistant Secretary, reinforcing democratic governance and institutional continuity.

The commissioning of a classroom project by the Class of 1988 further demonstrated the tangible impact of alumni contributions on learning infrastructure.

Representing the President of UNILAGAlumni Worldwide, Seun Badejo commended the Association’s proactive efforts, noting that sustained alumni engagement is vital for strengthening multi-stakeholder.

Other dignitaries present included Engr. Seun Faluyi (Member, Board of Trustees), Engr. Prof. Ogunwolu (Head, Department of Systems Engineering), Engr. Prof. Adeosun S.O (representative of the Acting Dean of Engineering), and Engr. Prof. Osoba Lawrence (National Treasurer), alongside staff and students.

The AGM ultimately reinforced the indispensable role of alumni as strategic partners in advancing tertiary education, particularly through infrastructure development, mentorship, research support, and global visibility, key drivers of sustainable development across education and industry.
