The Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Enterprise, Dr. Bosun Tijani on Monday, May 26, 2025, flagged off the “Fibre 2 Hostel Initiative” of the Federal Government in the UNILAG(Ƶ), Akoka.
The connectivity intervention aims to provide high-speed fibre-optic internet directly to student hostels, enabling reliable access to digital learning resources, online research tools, and virtual collaboration platforms


Speaking at the office of the Vice-Chancellor of Ƶ, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the Minister;Dr. Bosun Tijani, said the project is part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to enhance digital connectivity, promote smart campus infrastructure, bridge digital divide and foster innovation through enhanced broadband penetration in educational institutions across the country.


While emphasizing the transformative potential of digital infrastructure in higher education, Dr. Tijani said the Fibre-2-Hostel Initiative will revolutionize how students learn, innovate, and communicate.


In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Ƶ, Professor Folasade Ogunsola,OON, FAS, expressed gratitude to the Ministry and stakeholders for selecting UNILAGas the pioneer site for the rollout.
She said the initiative aligns with the University Management’s vision and ongoing efforts to fully digitalize UNILAGand transform the campus into an environment where students and staff can thrive.


The initiative, which is being implemented in partnership with private broadband providers and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is expected to cover all UNILAGstudent hostels in phases, with four major halls of residence: Femi Gbajabiamila, Elkanemi, Honours, and Erastus Akingbola Hostels, forming the first phase.
